More than just a Marathon!

Undoubtedly achieved Pakistani joined efforts for the new initiative Serena Hotels Hunza Marathon. Mirza Ali and Samina Baig with Ziyad Rahim aimed at promoting long-distance running and encouraging runners of all ages to discover the joy of running. The event was organized in collaboration with Serena Hotels – Aga Khan Social Welfare Board in attempts to raise awareness amongst the youth and to ‘Say No to Drugs” in KarimAbad Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan. Mirza & Samina, the Mountaineer duo, siblings those who brought global accolade to the region by reaching out the seven continents highest points as a brother-sister team, aiming to bring unique sports in the country and especially In Hunza, and engage youth in healthy activities . The international runner Ziyad Rahim also joined Hunza Marathon. Ziyad Rahim is a Pakistani adventure runner who has achieved ten Guinness World Records in marathons and ultra marathons respectively.

For the first time ever in Hunza, the organizer has opened this international sporting event for the participation of young people of any age; where international runners are also participating. This makes the Serena Hotels – Hunza Marathon main purpose of the awareness campaign is to create a culture of saying “No to Drugs”. We hope to create awareness and open up avenues for inclusion by making people run together despite their differences.  Chairman of the Pakistan Youth Outreach, Mr. Mirza Ali, shared his perspective on the new addition, “Over the years, many young running enthusiasts have expressed a wish that they could take part in the Marathon.” Mirza Ali and Samina Baig envision a healthy activity, promoting the positive message, and encouraging unique sports for everyone.


More than 200 local, national and international runners participated in 3 different categories. The 42 kilometers long full-marathon also highlighted International Athletes from Germany, Spain, and Japan.


This is the moment to celebrate and promote outdoor sports

Mirza Ali said that sports and events like this play a great deal in uniting individuals from everywhere throughout the world.

“It is something worth being thankful for as we are promoting outdoor sports and our nation through sports”. Furthermore, this will motivate youth to participate in Olympics in the future, I think there is a hope and trust that athletes will get more awards for the nation,” Mirza Ali added.

The ‘Incomparable Hunza Marathon, which was surrounded by beautiful mountains at an elevation of around 2,500 metres (8,200 ft), is an endeavor at inspiring the youth of the nation to get fit.
